How to Hire a Mover

MovingGetting ready to move can be stressful but the Oben Flats team wants to help make it as easy as possible! If you decide to hire movers, there's a few things you should take into consideration before selecting a moving company.

Get Estimates

Reputable moving companies will be able to provide you with a detailed estimate including a clear breakdown of charges. A big mistake many people make is not giving an accurate representation of how much stuff there is to move. Be sure to provide the moving company with correct information. Ontario's  Consumer Protection Act (CPA) states, "the mover cannot charge you more than 10% above the estimated cost" once the estimate is part of the contract." A reputable moving company will want to inspect your items to ensure the estimate is as accurate as possible. Remember, all moving contracts worth more than $50 must be in writing.

Check References

Friends, colleagues and family are always a good place to start when looking for moving company referrals. Don't assume that the biggest moving companies in your area are the best without checking with the Better Business Bureau and online forums. If things go south, the Consumer Protection Act lists your rights and offers a mediated complaints process. A moving company cannot legally hold your belongings to demand extra payment. Always ask for references and don't be afraid to call them.

Confirm the Company is Insured

The standard for moving companies when it comes to liability insurance is Replacement Value Protection (RVP) and coverage is usually only up to 60 cents per pound of any article destroyed or lost. Consider purchasing additional insurance and ask your mover what they suggest. An expensive item, such as your television or laptop, would not be replaceable with only 60 cents per pound RVP coverage. If you're uncomfortable with this level of protection, the moving company should be able to provide you with a detailed breakdown of coverage and other insurance options.

Don't Forget…

  • Ask your friends and trusted colleagues for referrals
  • Always make sure the company is insured
  • Get at least three estimates

The only thing left to do is ensure you've reserved the elevator for moving day with your Oben Flats property manager or using the online tool. Happy moving day and welcome home!
